- Mean – 31.87, Upper 10% farms – 37.37, Lower 10% farms – 25.71
A huge variation of 11.66 liveborn / female / year between the Upper 10% and the Lower 10% of farms.
Farrowing Rate
- Mean – 83.81, Upper 10% farms – 92.04, Lower 10% farms – 71.81
The top 10% of producers are farrowing 20.23 percentage points more of their bred sows than the bottom 10% of producers.
Q1 2025 versus Q1 2024
Sow Death rate has fallen dramatically in Q1 2025 from a level of 13.89% to 12.16%.

How Many Pigs should a Sow Nurse?
|
In the Benchmarking magazine was an article by Abigail Jenkins, a Ph.D. candidate from Kansas State University. This article reported on a study that looked at determining the optimum strategy for adjusting litter size to functional teat count in lactating sows. The study compared various transfer strategies to help balance litter demands on the sow. The full report will be available in November 2025 – but in the meantime, some early findings are available in this article
